Dr Grzegorz Bury from the Wrocław University of Life Sciences has been awarded the Prize of the President of the Polish Space Agency for the best thesis in the field of space research. The scientist from the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics was recognised for his determination of precise orbits of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) satellites.
The competition received 49 entries from 19 universities and research units from all over the country. Grzegorz Bury won the first award for his work ‘Precise orbit determination of GNSS Satellite using microwave and laser ranking date’.
Knowing the position of navigation satellites at any given time is crucial to taking full advantage of the capabilities of GNSS systems. The trajectory of movement is determined by the satellite’s orbit, the precise determination of which is necessary, among other things, to monitor rising sea and ocean levels, changes in gravitational potential and variations in the length of the Earth’s day.
