The University of Silesia, together with the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the University of Wrocław, the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, the Warsaw University of Technology, the Norwegian Polar Institute, the University Centre in Svalbard, the Norwegian Meteorological Institute and SIOS – Knowledge Centre, has undertaken the expansion and harmonisation of the observatory network on Svalbard.

The main objective of the Cryosphere Integrated Observatory Network on Svalbard is to create a measurement and instrumentation network, necessary for the calibration and validation process of remote sensing data, models or other indirect research methods.

A strong emphasis will be placed on harmonisation of measurements and standardisation of apparatus, taking into account retrofitting to current standards. The culmination of these efforts will be the transfer of raw, unprocessed data made available to the research community through open databases.
