The University of Silesia in Katowice became one of the 30 best national universities in 2013-19 submitting solutions to the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland and obtaining exclusive rights to protect intellectual property, in particular patents for inventions.

The report summarizing the inventive activity of employees of Polish universities in the years 2013–2019 was published by the Patent Office. According to the report, the University of Silesia took the15th place.

The university took the 2nd position in the category of so-called non-adjective universities (those that do not have a technical or natural profile), in two areas: in terms of the number of patent applications and utility patterns filed by domestic universities and in terms of the number of patents obtained for inventions and protection rights for utility patterns made by national universities.
