University of Silesia patented solutions co-authored by Katowice scientists

Researchers of the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals in Gliwice have developed effective methods for the synthesis of pyridine derivatives in the form of 4-alkoxy-2-bromopyridines.

New derivatives can be used in organic synthesis, coordination chemistry, organometallic chemistry and organic electronics. These derivatives are precursors of the structures of compounds used as luminescent materials. This is possible primarily due to the presence of a bromine atom, which allows to introduce easily various necessary, structural motifs, e.g. a pyridine motif, into the target structure.

The presence of an alkoxy group with a sufficiently long alkyl chain allows the target compound to be soluble in organic liquids, which is important for potential applications in organic electronics. Two solutions in this area have already been patented.
