Until March 8, 2020, the Museum of the University of Wroclaw (UW) is inviting for the exhibition “What does the Earth hide? Geology, mineralogy and paleontology at the University of Wroclaw”.
The exhibition was organized in cooperation with the Geological Museum of Henry Teisseyre, Mineralogical Museum of Kazimierz Maślankiewicz and the Department of Paleozoology at the Institute of Environmental Biology. It contains historical collections (e.g. from the collection of Henrik Steffens or Ferdinand Roemer) and specimens obtained as a result of the work of Polish researchers after 1945.
The history of geology, mineralogy and paleontology at the University of Warsaw dates back to 1812, when Prof. Karl von Raumer founded the Mineralogical Cabinet. His collection included minerals, petrographic and paleontological specimens and was systematically expanded in the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century. During World War II and after it was dispersed. Part of the mineralogical collection returned to Wrocław and became the basis for the Mineralogical Museum that is still operating today.
