University of Zielona Góra, thanks to a grant from the Marshal’s Office of the voivodeship Lubuskie, will carry out the project “Reintroduction in the Lubuskie Voivodeship of endangered plant species in Poland”. The task concerns the protection of the critically endangered fool’s watercress (Helosciadium nodiflorum) and will be carried out in the university’s botanical garden.
The only known Polish locality of this plant is in Królów in the Lubuskie Voivodeship. The watercrests growing there is in a very bad condition, the species requires active protection in order to preserve the population. The progeny plants from the Lubuskie population are grown in the Botanical Garden of the University of Zielona Góra.
The scientists’ are planning supplying the wild population of fool’s watercress in Królów, reintroducing this plant in documented historical places, introducing the species in the form of a demonstration plot in the park in Łęknica and publishing a book on the protection of nature of the region and Polish- German borderland.
