The University of Zielona Góra will study the impact of road investments on bat migration in the Natura 2000 area. The project has received funding from the Provincial Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Zielona Góra.
The money will be used to subsidise the purchase of a specialist thermal imager. It will be used to monitor bat migration in the area of the Nietoperek Nature Reserve and the impact of linear investments such as motorways and motorways on the process.
The use of thermal imaging makes it possible to track the flight of bats, which are fast and agile, making it very difficult to observe their behaviour. The documented effect of the project will be to learn about the migration routes of bats to wintering and breeding sites and the importance of road traffic for this process.
The Nietoperek reserve is one of the largest bat wintering grounds in central Europe. Every year, thousands of bats travel more than 200 kilometres to the reserve, which is a safe wintering ground for them.
