Dr Marta Skowron Volponi, entomologist, graduate of the Faculty of Biology at the University of Gdańsk, was awarded the Jan Uphagen Prize for Young Scientists in 2018 in the category of exact sciences.
She received the award for her original approach to entomology research – lepidopterology (a branch dealing with butterfly research), significant scientific achievements in the field of behavioral mimicry (conforming to a different species) and description of three new species of butterflies from the family of the viscera family imitating bees or wasps.
Jan Uphagen Award for Young Scientists is the most important distinction for young researchers granted in the Pomerania region. The prize for young scientists under the name “Young Heweliusz” was established in 2003, and since 2006 it has been called the Jan Uphagen Prize for Young Scientists.
