Biotechnologists of the University of Wrocław and chemists of Wrocław University of Technology discovered the activity of vitamin PP derivatives against the pathogenic bacterium Staphylococcus aureus – i.e. golden staphylococcus. The discovery was awarded a gold medal at the International Trade Fair for Inventions and Innovations INTARG.
New vitamin PP derivatives, synthesized by the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, consist of naturally occurring components: nicotinic acid amide (vitamin PP) and borneol or fenchol. Research on activity against Staphylococcus aureus, conducted at the University of Wrocław also showed that the tested vitamin PP derivatives are not cytotoxic.
Staphylococcal infection can lead to purulent diseases of the skin, subcutaneous tissues, inflammation of the bones, lungs, heart muscle, food poisoning, and even death. In recent years, new strains have emerged that are resistant to all currently known antibiotics in the world.
