Only until the end of October 2019 Poles can vote for the name for the Polish planet in the competition of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
The competition was organized on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the IAU. Each country can name one planet and one star. Poland received the gas giant BD + 14 4559 b, located in the constellation Pegasus, about 160 light-years from Earth.
In June and July Internet users submitted over 2.8 thousand ideas. The jury then selected the best suggestions.
List of selected names (in order: star name, planet name):
• Geralt and Ciri – characters from the saga about the Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski.
• Jantar and Wolin – the former Polish term for amber, Wolin is a Polish island on the coast of the Baltic Sea.
• Piast and Lech – characters from legends about the beginnings of the Polish state.
• Polon and Radium – names of chemical elements discovered by Maria Curie-Skłodowska.
• Solaris and Pirx – novel title and character from Stanisław Lem’s books.
• Swarog and Weles – deities from Slavic mythology.
• Twardowski and Boruta – characters from the legend of Twardowski.
