Numerous accompanying events have been planned during the World Copernican Congress in Toruń. The Congress has a dual character: on one hand, it is a state initiative sanctioned by the Act on the Establishment of the Copernican Academy; on the other, it is an initiative of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Jagiellonian University and the University of Warmia and Mazury.

The first part of the Congress, to be held in Toruń, is also a celebration of the astronomer’s 550th birthday. One of the elements of the ceremonies is the exhibition ‘Of all books the worthiest of reading…. Around De revolutionibus’ inside the Old Town Hall in Toruń. It consists of the oldest editions of Copernicus’ work as well as incunabula and old prints illustrating the context in which it was written.

Copernicus’ birthday is also a celebration of the Toruń University. On Saturday, on the eve of Nicolaus Copernicus’ 550th birthday, the Toruń Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Lithuanian conductor Dainius Pavilionis will perform in the Nicolaus Copernicus Auditorium.
