Two scientists from the University of Wrocław Grzegorz Zarzeczny and Tomasz Piekot research accessibility of official texts in the Internet. After providing a cross-sectional analysis they wrote the first report.
– Offices rarely adapt their articles to a specific medium, and the texts prepared by the institutions are usually difficult to learn and understand – such conclusions are drawn from a report prepared by Dr Grzegorz Zarzeczny and Dr Tomasz Piekot from the Laboratory of Polish Language at the Institute of Polish Philology of the University of Wrocław.
In their research, Wroclaw’s linguists had taken into account three properties of texts that testify to their affordability: the average sentence length, the percentage of long words in the text and the FOG index of visibility, i.e. educational indicator (it simulates how many classes one needs to complete in order to read the text with no problems).
In terms of the percentage of difficult vocabulary, the top ten results of the report are quite even. The least accessible are sites of the president’s and prime minister offices, two of ministries and three of provincial marshal offices.
