09.12.2021

Scientists from the University of Wrocław and Neelain University from Sudan have completed the EDAR (Eastern Desert Atbara River) project. The team also included researchers from scientific institutions from several countries, incl. Archaeological Museum in Gdańsk, Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral and Gyeongsang National University from South Korea and the British Royal Holloway University of London and Durham University.

The research allowed to capture the sequence of environmental changes that took place in the Eastern Desert from the Middle Pleistocene to the present day – from humid to extremely dry environmental conditions.

The most important result of archaeological research is the recognition of several horizons related to the so-called the Ashelian technocomplex, which is mainly characterized by the presence of the characteristic types of tools as handaxes and cleavers and lasted in Africa from about 1.7 million years ago to 150 thousand years ago.
