Wrocław University of Science and Technology and the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg to launch joint project

05.03.2020

Researchers at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology and the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg are working on a numerical model of a power boiler that will show the changes in its functioning when more renewable energy (RES) gets to the network and coal power plants need to work with less efficiency.

Researchers from Poland and South Africa are intending to determine a safe boiler operation regime at a reduced technical minimum (when more renewable energy gets into the network) using computer simulation. Thus, the researchers will also be able to identify potential operating ranges without modifying the pressure part and the combustion system, with minor changes in the control system or significant modifications to some components.
Part of the project include also experiments regarding more effective reduction of nitrogen oxides and mercury formed during combustion in power units.
