Professor Michał Grabowski from the University of Lodz to join the international research network Barcode of Life

23.05.2018

Professor Michał Grabowski from the Department of Zoology of Invertebrates and Hydrobiology at the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection of the University of Lodz was invited to join the international research network Barcode of Life (iBOL), which deals with the modern identification and serialization of species using a genetic code, or DNA nucleotide sequence.

The ordering of species using DNA nucleotide sequences was developed in 2003 by scientists from the University of Guelph in Canada. This is a new method that allows to assess the diversity of living beings. It reminds the system of bar codes being labeled to goods in a hypermarket. Researchers use a specific piece of DNA to identify a species that can not be confused with another species.
Currently, 28 countries from five continents have worked together in the iBOL research network. Poland will be the 7th European country that will join the organization.
