Scientists of Silesian University of Technology develop Automatic resuscitator

07.05.2020

The scientists of the Faculty of Environmental and Power Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology designed an automatic resuscitator to mechanical assisting the breathing of patients with breathing problems. Although it cannot be a substitute for a professional ventilator, it can be used in mild cases of respiratory failure.

The device works by squeezing the AMBU bag used for manual resuscitation. It is powered by an electric motor and controlled by a computer. – You can set the basic operating parameters: length of inspiration, time between successive inhalations, i.e. the frequency of breathing, the amount of air pushed into the lungs – says the leader of the team of scientists, Prof. Eng. Grzegorz Nowak.

The resuscitator will enhance the hospital equipment base and it will improve access to equipment and medical assistance to other patients with symptoms of shortness of breath and lighter respiratory problems.
