Young geologists from the University of Wroclaw studying Iceland

13.09.2018

Students from the Scientific Circle of Geologists of the University of Wrocław began the science camp “Iceland 2018”. The purpose of the expedition is to describe and document photographic major geological sites in Iceland, take samples of rocks forming volcanoes Askja, Hekla and Katla, and create a geotourist guide.

– Through the guide, we want to share the knowledge about the origins of Iceland, its age, the reason why in one part of the island we encounter rocks with a relatively sour composition, others with a more alkalid composition, however it would seem that Iceland abounds only in basalt rocks – explain participants.

The group of 12 students is supported by Prof. University of Wroclaw Marek Awdankiewicz – volcanologist, petrologist of igneous rocks from the Institute of Geological Sciences and Dr Honorata Awdankiewicz from the Polish Geological Institute of National Research Institute. Supervisors will watch over the scientific part of the trip.
