Wrocław University of Science and Technology developing robot for disinfecting rooms

17.07.2020

Scientists from the Mechatronics and Robotics Laboratory at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology are working on an autonomous robot that will facilitate the decontamination of rooms potentially contaminated with bacteria and viruses. “Covibot” is currently tested in work condidtions.

The robot has UV sterilizing lamps, used in hospitals and other medical facilities, i.e. in places where infection of sepsis, staphylococcus, pneumococcus or coronavirus can occur. These lamps kill bacteria, viruses and fungi by producing ultraviolet light.

The “Covibot” is small enough to navigate the corridors and medical rooms. The batteries will provide him with 6-8 hours of work. Currently, it is controlled remotely, ultimately it will work autonomously. It will use a laser scanner to recognize the space around it and map it (similarly to AGV industrial robots), in order to then map out the path of its work.
