Wrocław University of Science and Technology to conduct advanced research on chiral compounds

07.10.2020

Dr Eng. Elżbieta Wojaczyńska, professor of the Faculty of Chemistry of the Wrocław University of Technology, conducts advanced research on chiral compounds. They are used for the production of drugs, plant protection products, in the food and cosmetics industries.

The renowned journal “Chemical Reviews” published her article showing new trends in the synthesis of a group of such compounds – chiral sulfinyl compounds. Prof. Wojaczyńska wrote it together with her husband – Dr Jacek Wojaczyński of the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Wrocław. It is a review, presenting the results of research of scientists worldwide, included in nearly 400 articles from recent years, presenting their discussion, summary of results and presentation of the possibilities for the development of the field.

Sulfinyl compounds are increasingly often used as drugs. They include esomeprazole – used in the treatment of peptic ulcer disease. Another sulfoxide – modafinil – helps fight sleep disorders.
