Białystok University of Technology and Polish Academy of Sciences developed a mobile application for collecting scientific data from the Białowieża Primeval Forest

08.01.2021

The BioLoc application, a joint work of the Mammal Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Białowieża and the Białystok University of Technology, is an example of the implementation of citizen science, because every nature lover logged in to the application will be able to submit their observations regarding plants and animals.

The solution is to help scientists collect natural data, mainly from the Białowieża Forest. The inclusion of citizens increases the possibilities and scope of observation, which is important for a better understanding and protection of the most valuable areas of north-eastern Poland.

Three types of nature observations can be reported in the BioLoc application: Did you find a dead animal? – is a module that is used to report dead animals found in the forest or on the road; Invasive species – to report animals that are alien to the Białowieża Forest and other Polish ecosystems; Other observations – to report other general information.
