Biologists from the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań researching pigeons in Uganda

Five biologists from the University of Adama Mickiewicza in Poznań are implementing a research project in Uganda: “Compromise between signalling belonging to a species and distinguishing individuality in tropical Turtur pigeons”.

With funding from the National Science Center’s Opus program, researchers are analyzing the evolution of the ability to recognize both closely related species and individuals within a species based on sound signals. The subject of the research includes all five species of the genus Turtur, small pigeons, endemic to Africa, with very similar signals, used for defending the territory and attracting female Turtur birds.

Scientists who study tropical pigeons in Uganda are Prof. Tomasz Osiejuk, Dr Paweł Szymański, Dr Michał Budka, Dr Magdalena Herdegen-Radwan and Małgorzata Niśkiewicz.
