Wrocław anthropologists studying a lost village in the Czech Republic

31.08.2021

Two hundred graves, including Middle Ages cemetery, and valuable items were discovered by scientists from the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences during excavations in Libkovice, Czech Republic. Students and doctoral students of the university are researching a unique village that will be destroyed by a lignite mine in a few years.

The village of Libkovice is a unique place worldwide. It existed for over 800 years, only at the end of the 20th century it was dismantled. The research is carried out by the Institute for the Protection of Archaeological Monuments of North-West Bohemia in Most and the West Bohemian University in Pilsen, and since 2019 by the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences.

The research of the cemetery in Libkovice allows not only to recognize the culture and funeral customs of the former inhabitants of the Czech Republic, but most of all it provides information important for understanding the demography, health, nutrition and biology of the Central European community buried there – says Dr Paweł Konczewski from the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław.
