For the thirtieth time, the Foundation for Polish Science granted its awards. The Awards 2021 were received by four outstanding scientists: Prof. Bożena Kamińska-Kaczmarek, Prof. Jacek Jemielity, Prof. Grzegorz Pietrzyński and Prof. Cezary Cieśliński.
The prizes are awarded for special scientific achievements and discoveries that move the boundaries of cognition, open up new cognitive perspectives and make an outstanding contribution to the civilization and cultural progress of our country. The amount of the prize is 200,000. PLN.
Prof. Bożena Kamińska-Kaczmarek from the Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) in Warsaw received the Life and Earth Sciences Award 2021 for discovering the mechanisms that cause malignant gliomas to reprogram immune cells to support the development of these brain tumors.
Prof. Jacek Jemielity from the Center of New Technologies at the University of Warsaw (UW) received the Award in chemical sciences and materials for the development of chemical modifications of mRNA as tools for therapeutic applications and research on cellular processes.
Prof. Grzegorz Pietrzyński from the M. Kopernik Astronomical Center PAN in Warsaw received the Prize in mathematical, physical and engineering sciences for the precise determination of the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud.
Prof. Cezary Cieśliński from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Warsaw received the Award in humanities and social sciences for solving key problems of deflationist theory of truth.
