Professor Piotr Trzonkowski, Head of the Chair and Department of Medical Immunology at the Medical University of Gdańsk, was the winner of this year’s Health Visionaries competition organised by the editors of the Wprost weekly. He was awarded in the category of Visionary of Science.
The jury appreciated Professor Trzonkowski’s research into the therapeutic use of regulatory T lymphocytes in autoimmune diseases, which made it possible to develop a new method of combating this type of illness. The laureate’s experiments are an opportunity to create an innovative therapy to be used in the treatment of early forms of type 1 diabetes and the prevention of the disease.
Prof. Trzonkowski was the first in the world to use Treg lymphocytes in the treatment of type 1 diabetes and is still developing this method. Modified regulatory cells can also be used to treat neurodegenerative diseases, including multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
