This year’s Academic Ranking of World Universities, known as the Shanghai List, has been released. The list includes 9 Polish universities. The highest place (in the 401-500 range) is occupied by the University of Warsaw together with the Jagiellonian University in Kraków.

ARWU is an international ranking of the world’s best universities published since 2003. The ShanghaiRanking Consultancy assesses more than 2,500 universities. The 1,000 highest ranked form the so-called Shanghai List. 

Harvard University is ranked first on this year’s list, Stanford University second and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) third.

The Shanghai List is compiled on the basis of six indicators, including the number of alumni and staff who have received a Nobel Prize or Fields Medal, the number of authors of the most cited scientific papers, the number of articles in Nature and Science journals, and data on the university’s publication output in selected Web of Science™ databases: the Science Citation Index Expanded™ and the Social Sciences Citation Index™.
