Dr Andrzej Betlej from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, currently the director of the National Museum in Krakow (MNK) has been appointed the director of the Wawel Royal Castle, replacing Prof. Jan Ostrowski on this position. The head of the MNK will be Dr Andrzej Szczerski. All three scholars work for the History Department of the Jagiellonian University. The new directors will take over from the beginning of 2020.
The Ministry of Culture and National Heritage informed about the changes. Professor Jan Ostrowski, outstanding museum worker, a long-time researcher of the Institute of Art History at the Jagiellonian University and a recognized international authority in the field of art history, decided to retire after 30 years of work at the Wawel.
Dr Andrzej Betlej works at the Institute of Art History at the Jagiellonian University. His scientific works deal with modern art, especially on architecture and sculpture in the eastern territories of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. On his initiative, a permanent Conference of Directors of the Institutes of Art History in Poland was created.
