Gdańsk scientist receives the prestigious grant of the European Research Council

Dr Michał R. Szymański from the intercollegiate faculty of biotechnology of the University of Gdańsk and the Medical University of Gdańsk received a prestigious grant of the European Research Council in the amount of EUR 1.5 million.

The European Research Council (ERC) grant was awarded within the program ERC Starting Grant for the project ‘Dissecting the mechanism of DNA repair in human mitochondria’. The project will be implemented for five years. Research will allow understanding of the fundamental principles of repair of human mitochondrial DNA, which may contribute to understanding the basics of mitochondrial diseases.

Getting a grant in the ERC competition is a special distinction. ERC’s mission is to finance pioneering groundbreaking research, and the only criterion for evaluating ideas is scientific excellence. The guiding motto of ERC grants is “High risk – high gain”.
