An interdepartmental Laboratory for the Analysis of Music, Speech and Gesture is being established at Adam Mickiewicz University (UAM) in Poznań. It will conduct comparative research on two very interesting human communication phenomena, namely natural language and music.
Currently, researchers and computer scientists are creating a music database to simulate the musical environment of modern humans. The database is being built on the basis of information obtained from the Internet.
‘Our tool allows us to find out which pieces of music are downloaded more frequently and which less frequently, which gives us a statistical picture of the musical environment, and secondly, it allows us to extract structural information, i.e. musical intervals and rhythmic values, from recordings. In addition, the IT team is developing software that allows us to calculate how much we expect consecutive sounds of music, speech, but also gestures accompanying speech’, says Dr Piotr Podlipniak, Professor at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.
