Distinguished American jurist Joseph H. H. Weiler, professor at New York University and specialist in constitutional and international law, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lodz (UŁ). The awarding ceremony took place during the ceremonial meeting of the Senate of the University of Lodz inaugurating the new academic year 2022/23, and the hero of the ceremony himself delivered his lecture in Polish.

“It is rare to find lawyers who are prepared to link law with political science, culture and philosophy. There is no doubt that the courage to transcend the narrow horizons of law is a characteristic of Professor Joseph H. Weiler” wrote Michał Kazimierz Ujazdowski, Professor of Law at the University of Łódź, senator of the Republic of Poland and promoter of the h.c. doctorate for the American scientist.

Professor Weiler was born in 1951 in Johannesburg (South Africa). He is a lawyer, a specialist in constitutional, international and EU law. He was rector of the European University Institute in Florence and has worked as a lecturer at the University of Michigan, Harvard University and New York University.
