During work in the basement of the Baroque part of the Świdnica Cathedral, workers discovered a previously unknown space and the bones of at least 38 people, including three children. One of the scientists working on the discovery is Prof. Jacek Szczurowski, an anthropologist from Wrocław University of Life Sciences.
Discovered during the preparation of burial sites for the bishops of Świdnica, the crypt most likely served for many years as a room where bones were moved. Researchers do not yet know whether the remains came from elsewhere in the church or from the cemetery next to the church.
“The mere finding and exploration of the remains is only the beginning of the research, from which we will learn, among other things, for what reason the people whose remains have been deposited in the crypt died, how old they were, what their diet was and what social class they came from”, says Prof. Szczurowski.
