A system for remote monitoring of patients after oncological treatment has been developed at the Medical University of Gdansk (GUMed). The application enables faster detection of lung cancer recurrence.

The author of the solution is Ewa Pawłowska from the Chair and Department of Oncology and Radiotherapy at GUMed. The system she has developed allows contact to be maintained between the patient and the oncologist between scheduled outpatient appointments, and enables faster detection of tumour recurrence.

The HORUS application can be used by patients under the care of the Oncology Outpatient Clinic of the Department of Oncology and Radiotherapy. Participants complete an electronic questionnaire once a week, which is then analysed by an algorithm.

When alarming symptoms are reported that may indicate a recurrence of the cancer, the doctor receives an alert, after which they have the opportunity to call the patient and, if necessary, order additional tests or reschedule a scheduled appointment at the outpatient clinic.
