Architect of the Wrocław University of Technology receives the Vitruvius Prize

The book “WUWA 1929–2019. Wrocław exhibition of Werkbund” by Dr Eng. Jadwiga Urbanik, Wrocław University of Science and Technology won the prestigious the Marek Witruwiusz Award. The award is granted by the Architecture and Town Planning Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences. 

The author of the book, based on on original archival materials stored at the Museum of Architecture in Wrocław. She showed the complex nature of the experimental WUWA housing estate in Wrocław, which delivered new types of cheap, small and medium-sized apartments, as well as innovative technologies and construction materials.

The housing estate was located between today’s Wróblewski, Tramwajowa, Dembowski, Zielony Dąb and Kopernik streets. It was established on the initiative of Werkbund – an organization founded in 1907 that brought together architects, artists and construction engineers. The activities of the Werkbund had a significant impact on the development of the ​​modernist architecture in Germany and the neighboring countries.
