The Bioceramic Team at the AGH University of Science and Technology (AGH) in Kraków, from the Department of Materials Science and Ceramics Engineering, led by Professor Aneta Zima, is conducting scientific research into innovative materials used to fill bone defects.
Some of the biomaterials developed are already used in medicine. One example is FlexiOss®, a bone-replacement biomaterial developed in cooperation with the Medical University of Lublin, commonly referred to as ‘artificial bone’.
According to AGH, work on bone substitute materials focuses on combining the advantages of synthetic and natural compounds to form hybrid materials.
Dr Eng. Joanna Czechowska, who is a member of the Bioceramic Team, has received a grant under which she is working on a hybrid material in the form of granules with bactericidal properties. The granules may find application as carriers of drugs and biologically active substances in targeted therapies, as well as components of bone substitute materials.
