The “Heart of the Garden” beech tree growing in the Wojslawice Arboretum – Botanical Garden of the University of Wroclaw (UWr) has been selected as the European Tree of the Year 2024. In the online voting, the “Heart of the Garden” received 39,158 votes, followed by the French beech tree from Bayeux in second place with 24,807 votes, and the olive tree from Luras (Sardinia) in third place with 13,933 votes.

The majestic beech tree “Atropunicea” has a history of more than 200 years, growing in the center of the old park, the most valuable part of the Wojsławice Arboretum.

Over the years it has been a silent observer of the turbulent history that has been going on in the lands of Lower Silesia and, above all, the Wojsławice park. It is also one of the most photographed trees in the university’s arboretum – most visitors, and there are more than 130,000 of them a year, have a photo with it, or at least remember its unusual image. The mighty tree impresses with its leaves, which turn beautifully purple, the UWr website says.
