The Metropolitan of Pereyaslav and Vishnev, Oleksandr Drabynka, Vice-Chairman of the Synodal Commission for Inter-Christian Relations of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, handed over a facsimile of the famous ‘Peresopniche Evangeliary’ to the Rector of the University of Wrocław, Prof. Robert Olkiewicz. This is a symbolic gesture of gratitude for the commitment of the University of Wrocław community to helping war refugees from Ukraine.
The 16th-century manuscript is considered a national treasure of Ukraine. The 482 pages record the oldest surviving translation of the four Gospels from Old Church Slavonic into Old Russian.
The manuscript was written in 1556-1561 from the foundation of the Volyn princess Anastasia Zaslavskaya. Until 1701, it was kept in the Orthodox monastery in Peresopnica, then given by Hetman Ivan Mazepa to the Cathedral Sobor in Pereyaslav. Since 1948, it has been part of the special collection of the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine in Kyiv.
