A heating system in a medieval castle and one of the oldest royal kitchens are the discoveries made by scientists of the archaeology department at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Since August 2023, archaeologists have been working on Przemysl Hill in Poznań, in the castle courtyard and in the cellars of the administrative building of the Museum of Applied Arts, referred to in historical literature as the Royal Kitchen.

“Particularly noteworthy is the hypocaustum tile, which is evidence of the existence of heating in the medieval castle in Poznan. In addition, the level of the road made of fieldstones surrounding the inner courtyard of the residence was also documented. We can date the road to the 15th century”, says the head of the research team, Prof. Artur Różański.

The research also unearthed one of the oldest royal kitchens preserved in Poland. The objects known and recognised so far (mainly in fragments) date from the 16th century.
