On January 28, 2020, a driverless tram with an autonomous control system was launched officially in Krakow. The show was a summary of the first stage of the scientific and research project “Autonomization of trams as a tool supporting the work of tram drivers”, in which Krakow University of Technology (PK) has participated. Tram type 126N “Nevelo” with autonomous control mode will operate on the route from the National Museum of Krakow to Cichy Kącik.
The tram autonomy project is implemented by a consortium consisting of: NEWAG SA, the Institute of Rail Vehicles of the Krakow University of Technology, CYBID sp.z o.o., MEDCOM sp.z o.o. and MPK S.A. in Krakow.
The joint development works include an autonomous tram control system 126N. was designed and manufactured by Newag S.A, which communicates with the main tram driver, enabling driving without a driver in the cabin.
The autonomous control system enables precise speed control, door, bell and safety control. Based on a very precise satellite navigation and measurement of the route from the wheels of the vehicle, the tram automatically stops at stops (opens, closes the door and activates a warning signal before moving off), and also reacts to speed limits.
