“Innovative (eco)material for use in agriculture and horticulture” – invention of Dr Agnieszka Richert and Dr Grażyna B. Dąbrowska, from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń from the Faculty of Biological and Veterinary Sciences won the bronze medal of the “E-INNOVATE International Innovation Show 2022” international fair.

The awarded invention is a method for producing (eco)films from polylactide with tar, a product of dry wood distillation. Thanks to this component, a chocolate-coloured material was obtained, which has favourable functional, barrier and bacteriostatic properties against pathogenic microorganisms.

These advantages make the product stand out for its wide range of applications, including in horticulture, agriculture and the packaging industry. As studies have shown, the product is biodegradable in the aquatic environment, in soil or in compost at the end of its useful life”.
