A pioneering liver transplantation taken from a deceased donor and split for two adult recipients has been performed at the Department of General, Transplant and Liver Surgery at the University Clinical Centre of the Warsaw Medical University (WUM). This is another milestone in the transplantation programme at WUM.
The operation (split liver transplantation) involved dividing an organ taken from a deceased donor and transplanting the right part of the liver for one recipient and the left part of the liver for the other recipient.
The complexity of the procedure reflects the size of the team involved: 15 surgeons, two anaesthesiologists, a radiologist, five female instrumentalists, four female anaesthetists. That’s more than 20 people fighting for the success of a complex procedure. Fortunately, both liver fragments took up function after transplantation. The patients are in good condition with no post-operative complications.
