A new therapeutic method of treating stroke developed at the Department of Neurology of the Medical University of Gdańsk has been successfully completed. The research was conducted as part of two projects funded by the Medical Research Agency for a total amount of more than PLN 30 million.

“In the first patient in the world treated with our proposed regimen, we achieved resolution of all symptoms of acute stroke, which are included in the so-called NIHSS scale. If the research proves effective, every year tens or even hundreds of people in a country such as ours will return to normal or near-normal life activity after a stroke, and probably international societies would also implement these standards, says the head of the research team, Professor Bartosz Karaszewski, quoted in the university’s website.

Stroke is the most common cause of permanent disability in adults worldwide and one of the most common causes of death.
