Gdańsk University of Technology closer to implement polymer biocomposite

24.12.2021

The Gdańsk University of Technology concluded a license agreement with Bio Plast Pom Sp. z o. o., which intends to implement a biodegradable polymer composite, created at the university’s chemistry department, for the production of biodegradable and compostable packaging, previously made of petroleum derivatives.

The subject of the contract is innovative polymer biocomposition, obtained with the use of thermoplastic starch (TPS) from potato flour and polylactide (PLA), which due to their composition and compostability are included in the group of “zero waste” materials. The invention is protected by a European patent in Poland, France, Germany and Great Britain.

It is already the second license agreement on eco-materials in the list of achievements of the research team from the University of Technology. Previously, scientists also developed further variants of polymer biocompositions, including one without PLA.
