Martyna Krzysteczko, this year’s graduate of the Faculty of Architecture at the Silesian University of Technology, has won the 24th nationwide academic competition for the best thesis – Concrete Architecture 2023. Her work ‘Memory Decks – KWK Centrum XXI. Conceptual design of a multifunctional building in Bytom’.
‘Memory Levels – KWK Centrum XXI’ is a conceptual design for a multifunctional building in Bytom that is not indifferent to the disappearance of a landscape that forms part of the history, culture and identity of Upper Silesia. It can be interpreted as a manifesto intended to provoke reflection. It aims to draw attention to existing, mostly neglected mine architecture and to restore the memory of objects that no longer exist”, says the winner.
Initiated in 2000, the competition is organised by the Faculty of Architecture of the Krakow University of Technology and the Association of Cement Producers. The winning project turned out to be the best among 25 entries.
