A team of scientists from the University of Warsaw (UW) led by Professor Jacek Jemielity and Dr Joanna Kowalska, in collaboration with researchers from the Warsaw Medical University and the UW spin-off company ExploRNA Therapeutics, has developed a new modification of mRNA.

The properties of the new molecule could be a breakthrough for modern medicine. Thanks to the scientists’ discovery, it will be possible to further develop modern targeted therapies based on mRNA technology, including the treatment of rare diseases or the design of cancer vaccines.

“Thanks to this technology, the medical world can think about much broader applications of mRNA. We are no longer just talking about the production of anti-covid vaccines, which seems to be the simplest application of mRNA technology. Such an efficiently translatable mRNA molecule can be used to design new anti-cancer therapies, apply in the treatment of rare diseases and various diseases with a genetic basis”, said Prof Jacek Jemielity from the UW’s Centre for New Technologies, founder of the UW’s spin-off company ExploRNA Therapeutics, involved in the discovery of the new mRNA modification.

The findings of the Warsaw scientists were published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
