Researchers from the Faculty of Horticulture, Biotechnology and Landscape Architecture of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW) are searching new applications for a variety of hardy kiwi – a fruit grown in experimental orchards of the Warsaw university.

Bingo, a variety of hardy kiwi developed at WULS-SGGW, is very easy to grow. It does not require chemical protection, and the fruits are almost free of disease or pests. Hardy kiwis are small and have an edible peel. The research confirms that it is one of the richest fruit in bioactive components, it contains vitamin C, lutein, polyphenols and proteolytic enzyme – actinidin. Their consumption positively affects the functioning of the digestive system, they also have a protective effect on the cardiovascular system.

In September first hardy kiwis will be sold to Polish supermarkets, and a team of scientists from SGGW began work on the use of fruit in food processing.
