The University of Gdańsk joined the group of institutions supporting bees and became the owner of its own municipal apiary. Six young bee families live among the trees in the former rector’s office in Oliwa. They are looked after by a professional company Pszczelarium, which runs apiaries in several cities in Poland.
University bees will probably benefit from the proximity of the Ekopark, where they will find many interesting plants and vital water. By giving the bees a new home, the University contributes to increasing the number of bees and better pollination of the plants around the hives. By building small apiaries and caring for flower meadows and honey-bearing plantings, it contributes to the well-being of all pollinators.
The functioning of the apiary will have a positive impact on environmental education. Workshops with a beekeeper are planned for interested employees and students of the university. They will allow to know these beneficial insects better and learn more about them.
