The Medical University of Wrocław has started the implementation of the international SAPIENECE project. The university team will analyze the social and psychological factors that have long-term effects on autoimmune encephalitis with the presence of antibodies against NMDA receptors.
NMDA receptor-associated encephalitis is a rare autoimmune disease with severe neurological course and neuropsychiatric symptoms (such as hallucinations, seizures, etc.). As the disease was recently discovered (2007), its psychosocial impact has not been sufficiently analyzed and its consequences for patients have not been determined.
The research carried out in Wrocław aims to develop guidelines for patient care. The project is the first attempt to bridge the gap between the standardized assessment and the individual assessment of the patient’s experience in the long-term follow-up of patients with autoimmune encephalitis.
