International scientists researching changes in Spitsbergen glaciers

10.08.2021

Scientists from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, together with their colleagues from Taiwan and Latvia are studying the changes in the glaciers of the northwestern Spitsbergen as an indicator of contemporary transformations taking place in the cryosphere. The research is part of a project by the National Science Center.

The research work is carried out in collaboration with scientists at the National Center University in Taipei, Taiwan, will include high-resolution microseismic observations due to glacier migration in polar regions, surface geology and topographic evolution of periglacial land areas.

Researchers will also perform preliminary instrumental tests to observe the deformation characteristics of surface and surface rocks, and oceanographic studies using marine measurement buoys. Together with scientists from the University of Latvia, research will be conducted mainly in thermal structure and intra-glacial drainage.
