An international team of scientists, led by Polish astronomers have discovered the smallest free planet of the Earth type. The team of astronomers includes Dr Przemysław Mróz from the California Institute of Technology in the USA and Dr Radosław Poleski from the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw.

Astronomers have discovered more than four thousand extrasolar planets. Most of them are not like the planets known in the solar system, but they have one thing in common – they orbit a star.

A few years ago, Polish scientists from the OGLE team of the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw for the first time provided evidence of the existence of free planets in the Milky Way.

In the latest Astrophysical Journal Letters, astronomers from the OGLE team informed about the discovery of the smallest free planet.
