Researchers at the Medical University of Gdansk have been granted a patent for the invention ‘Pharmaceutical composition for bone tissue implantation, the method of obtaining it and its use to produce an implant for use in the treatment of bone tissue’. It will allow bone infections to be treated more effectively.
The innovative solution by Prof. Magdalena Prokopowicz and Dr Adrian Szewczyk consists of combining a silica material with an antibiotic and a bio-glass with high mineralisation properties. The result is a bifunctional drug formulation with antimicrobial activity and bone tissue regeneration support.
The research, which results were patented, was conducted within the OPUS 15 competition. In subsequent stages, Prof. Prokopowicz’s research team is planning to extend the research to in vivo models by applying for further funds in competitions announced by the National Science Centre and the National Centre for Research and Development.
