Italian-born Dr Marco Deiana has won a grant in the Polonez 3 competition of the National Science Centre. Thanks to funding of over PLN 1.2 million, he will start his research at the Faculty of Chemistry of Wrocław University of Technology (‘PWr’) in October. He will deal with the ‘Molecular characterisation of hypoxic tumours in the development of anticancer therapies’. – reports the university.

Dr Deiana graduated from the University of Cagliari, Italy, and obtained his PhD from the Faculty of Chemistry at PWr. His doctoral thesis focused on the study of canonical and non-canonical DNA structures, such as G-quadruplexes (G4s), using functional photonic materials.

G-quadruplexes are biologically active structures found in the genomic DNA of metabolising cells. Due to their incompletely established biological function, G-quadruplexes are currently the subject of much research, including as potential cellular targets for cancer therapies.
